Initial Response Team (formerly Crisis Team)

Support for urgent mental health difficulties

The Initial Response Team replaced the crisis team earlier in 2013. The Initial Response Team supports people to access the right to help to resolve their current difficulties. The team provides practical advice, emotional support from qualified nursing staff and when appropriate, routing to the right service.

The teams are made up of the clinical leads, qualified mental health clinicians and experienced support staff. The teams are also supported by clinicians from specialist areas of care such as:

  • Children's and Young People's Mental Health Services
  • Learning Disability Service
  • Older Persons Mental Health Services

Anyone who lives in South of Tyne and Wearside who has a know mental health problem and is in need or urgent help and support can contact the Initial Response Team. This includes service users, carers and relatives. People who have not been previously diagnosed with a mental health problem are usually referred to the Initial Response Team via their GDP, Social Care Professional or voluntary organisations.

If you urgently need specialist advice, even if you have not been diagnosed with a mental health problem, you can still talk to a member of the team who can advise you.

We offer talking therapies for people in South Tyneside who are experiencing mild to moderate anxiety and/or depression.

We all experience mental health difficulties at some points in our lives; in fact, 1 in 4 people in the UK will experience depression and/or anxiety each year (Mind, 2018). At South Tyneside Lifecycle Service we work with people presenting with mild to moderate anxiety and depression. Our aim is to help people better understand these difficulties and so begin to heal, recover and improve their wellbeing.

WHIST provides a wide range of services to women over 16 years old in a safe and strictly confidential environment. Services address complex and enduring issues. Mental health, physical health, long term conditions and personal progression are contained within our counselling services, support groups, courses and activities, which are aimed at improving health and wellbeing.

We can arrange a “Meet and Greet” appointment with a volunteer to give you an overview of the organisation and the services we provide.  These sessions usually take place at 10.30am on Thursdays for new members and at 11.30am for professionals.  Alternative appointments can be made by arrangement.  Information and advice is provided in confidence to help new members make informed decisions to improve their health and wellbeing.

While all provision is free, we do encourage donations when attending as the services rely on such contributions.
